Adult Programs

MPPL offers programs and activities for adults that inform, educate, charm, entertain, amaze, and delight with topics that cover just about everything. Best of all, most events are free (you don't even need a Library Card). For a complete calendar of events choose the "calendar" option on the left.

Program seating for registered patrons is on a first-come, first-served basis. Doors open 15 minutes before the program begins.

Register for all program on the Internet, at the Registration Desk, or by telephone at 847-253-5675. Fees, when applicable, must be paid at the Registration Desk. Fees are nonrefundable unless the program is canceled. See you at the Library!

Computer Basics


Dip your toes in the computer literacy waters with this program designed for novice users. Participants will learn the basics of the mouse and keyboard and take a tour of the computer “desktop.” All beginners are welcome.

Learn to Use the Internet


An introduction to the newest version of Internet Explorer® Web browser (IE7) and the World Wide Web. Users will learn about Web addresses, links, and more. Attendees should have a basic knowledge of computers and experience using a mouse. Prerequisite: Basic knowledge of computers and experience using a mouse or Computer Basics course.

Advanced Internet Skills


Internet users looking for more information on surfing the World Wide Web will discover how to set a homepage, “bookmark” favorite Web pages, and learn more about Internet Explorer during this course for more advanced Internet users. Prerequisite: Basic understanding of the Internet or Learn to Use the Internet course.

Searching for Websites with YAHOO!® and Google™


Finding useful information on the Internet can be daunting task. Learn how to find information using Yahoo! Search directory and Google. This program covers basic search skills and how to interpret results from these search giants. Prerequisite: Internet experience is required.

Learn to Use Web-Based E-mail


Attendees will sign up for a free Yahoo!® Web-based e-mail account, learn how to send and receive e-mail messages, create an Internet address book, and organize e-mail into folders. Prerequisite: Learn to Use the Internet course or Internet experience.

Advanced Web-Based E-mail


Discover how to download attachments, create folders and subfolders, and more during this program that focuses on the more advanced features of a Yahoo! E-mail account. Prerequisite: Learn to Use Web-Based E-mail program or have a Yahoo! e-mail account.

Windows XP® Basics


This two-part program introduces computer users to Windows XP, the latest version of the venerable Windows operating system. Take a tour of XP and learn to create desktop shortcuts, create folders, delete files, and more. Prerequisite: Prior experience with computers or Computer Basics course.

Word Processing Basics Using Word 2003®


Throw away that old typewriter and learn to create professional-looking documents with the popular software program, Word 2003. This program will cover how to edit material with ease by using features such as “cut and paste.” Prerequisite: Computer and keyboarding experience or Computer Basics course.

More Word Processing Basics Using Word 2003®


Explore a range of more advanced Word 2003® features during this program designed for more experienced program users. Learn how to change document margins, alignments, fonts, and more. Prerequisite: Basic experience with Word or
Word Processing Basics course.

Microsoft Word® 2003: Beyond the Basics


Do tabs, outlines, lists, and margins throw you for a loop? This "Beyond the Basics" class offers users information to master more advanced word processing capabilities. Participants should have word processing experience or have completed the Library’s "Word Processing Basics" course.

Creating a Presentation With PowerPoint 2003®


Discover how to make visually appealing presentations for the classroom or boardroom with PowerPoint 2003. This program will cover some of the skills necessary to create and edit simple presentations. Prerequisite: Basic word processing experience or Word Processing Basics course.

Excel® Basics


Master the basics of the Microsoft Excel® spreadsheet program during this course specially designed for beginners. Participants will also learn how to enter data into spreadsheet form and format documents for particular uses. Prerequisite: Computer and keyboarding experience or Computer Basics course.

More Excel® Basics


Continue learning the basics of working with the Microsoft Excel® spreadsheet program. Participants will learn how to work with simple formulas and will continue learning the tricks to creating helpful spreadsheet. Prerequisite: Computer and keyboarding experience, previous knowledge of Excel or Excel Basics course.

Explore MPPL’s Online Catalog


The Library’s Online Catalog allows users to place holds, view their accounts, and conduct searches from any computer, anywhere! Users will be provided with instruction on how to use this valuable Library tool. Attendees will also learn how to create book lists that may be printed or e-mailed. Prerequisite: Experience with a mouse or Computer Basics course.
