Internet Safety
Here are eight simple rules that are just the beginning of your child’s safe journey on the Internet.
- Keep the computer in a location where it can be seen by you, such as in the family room and not the bedroom.
- Spend time surfing with your child to find out what sites interest him or her, and why.
- Find sites that you feel are appropriate for your child and direct him or her there.
- Be sure your child understands never to meet someone they’ve met online unless they have your permission and are with you at the time.
- Teach your child about the importance of not revealing personal information such as name, address, school, teams they play on, photos, passwords, and other things that are private.
- Ask your child about the “friends” he or she is making online.
- Teach your child to tell you if he or she encounters something inappropriate or upsetting.
- Post your family’s Internet rules at the computer.
